The Dangers of Rats and Mice

Many people have an inherent dislike or fear of mice and rats and, considering how dangerous they can be to humans, that’s understandable considering how dangerous they are.

Mice, rats and the parasites that come with them can carry many diseases, some of which can be deadly to humans. To name a few: Hantavirus, Listeria, Rat-Bite Fever and Salmonellosis.  Not forgetting Bubonic Plague, or Black Death as it was known! That plague killed half the population of Europe a few centuries ago. Many of these diseases are common across the world as much as Manila, but it still helps you to be educated about them so to understand why people and rodents should not really cohabit in their residences.

Mice and rats can also play a large role in contributing to dangerous allergies. Studies show mouse urine in levels that could trigger allergies in 35% of homes. In some places small amounts or higher were found in 82% of homes. Mouse droppings are also a factor in allergies. Often unknown to them, many people are allergic to mouse droppings as there are to mold and dust. Exposure to mouse allergen is a known cause of asthma in children and adults.

TIP:  Always, always wipe all your kitchen surfaces in the morning with a good disinfectant. You just dont know whats been wandering around at night, or where it has urined!

In addition to health issues, mice and rats can also take a toll on your home. They will eat just about anything – including parts of your house. Their teeth can gnaw through insulation, wallboards, cardboard and wood. Some are especially fond of electrical wiring and that can lead to real danger. Exposed wires resulting from mice are believed to cause up to 25% of house fires.

In colder weather your home becomes even more appealing to mice and rats. Not that they care that much about cold, if they are around sooner or later your house will be interesting to them and they will visit. They like to seek refuge in warm dry place if possible and your house will do very nicely.
