Flies

Real name “Diptera” in our homes and businesses are a real nuisance.  Here, we will tell you a little about them and how to minimise their impact. Around 1 million species of flies exist, not all in the Philippines luckily!! Most flies live about 2 to 3 weeks and go through several stages in their short lives. They start out as larvae or maggots. While as stated, flies are a real pain, but for the planet they do have value, (more information on that below if interested). They can also be used in medical ways, for example with flesh wounds as well as experiments for new chemicals, etc.

Common Fruit Fly

There are many types, the common house fly and blue & green-bottles and Fruit flies being the ones we are most accustomed with.

Common House Fly

House Flies
Adult House flies can grow up to 6 mm and live around 2 to 3 weeks. They are complex creatures with highly tuned senses and skilled flying abilities. They have a sense of taste via their feet and this is an extremely sensitive system.

They turn food solids to liquid by spitting and vomiting their acids on to it and they suck up the liquids in a tubular tongue. They love to eat rotten meat, veg and decaying organisms or flesh. Animal, pets and human waste is attractive because its easy to find with its strong odorous. Flies stay around the area of birth generally but can travel if they need to for food and breeding.

Flies can carry many diseases and bacteria harmful to humans and its vital for you, your customers and family’s well-being to control or reduce them to an absolute minimum.

Good sense tactics

  • Keep everything and everywhere CLEAN. All around outside your premises as well as inside.
  • Kitchens, bathrooms and all the rooms in your premises must be food / crumbs / dirt free.
  • Remove trash quickly, efficiently and put in sealed bags or air-tight garbage cans.
  • Ensure there is no waste from animals and clean it thoroughly if there has been any.
  • Mesh over windows and screen doors where possible will also reduce helpto their presence.

Fruit Flies live for about 10 days., they use rotting veg and fruit to nest.  They are also common in homes, restaurants and other facilities where food is processed. They are especially like garbage that just lies around. They do have bad effects on people in that they carry so many bacteria and can make us very ill.

Best simple Prevention for Fruit Flies:

  • Keep your premises clean.
  • Remove trash and wast food every day
  • Keep ALL kitchen surfaces, floors walls shelves clean.
  • Remove rotting food from your kitchens asap and seal it tie it up securely in trash bins. Simply dumping it in a bin, which is open to the air sometimes or occasionally is not enough to keep them away.

Facts on Flies

True flies are insects of the order Diptera, the name being derived from the Greek di = two, and ptera = wings. Insects of this order use only a single pair of wings to fly, the hindwings being reduced to club-like balancing organs known as halteres. Diptera is a large order containing an estimated 1,000,000 species including horse-flies, crane flies, hoverflies and others, although only about 125,000 species have been described and fully understood.

Flies have a mobile head, with a pair of large compound eyes, and mouth-parts designed for piercing and sucking (mosquitoes, black flies and robber flies), or for lapping and sucking in the other groups. Their wing arrangement gives them great manoeuverability in flight, and claws and pads on their feet enable them to cling to smooth surfaces. Flies undergo complete metamorphosis; the eggs are laid on the larval food-source and the larvae, which lack true limbs, develop in a protected environment, often inside their source of their food. The pupa is a tough capsule from which the adult emerges when ready to do so; flies mostly have short lives as adults.

Diptera is one of the major insect orders and are of considerable ecological and human importance. Flies are important pollinators, second only to the bees and their Hymenopteran relatives. Flies may have been among the evolutionarily earliest pollinators responsible for early plant pollination.

Fruit flies are used as model organisms in research, but less benignly, mosquitoes are vectors for malaria, dengue, West Nile fever, yellow fever, encephalitis, and other infectious diseases, and houseflies spread food-borne illnesses.

Flies are often a great annoyances especially in some parts of the world where they can occur in large numbers, buzzing and settling on the skin or eyes to bite or seek fluids. Larger flies such as tsetse flies and screwworms cause significant economic harm to cattle. Blowfly larvae, known as gentles, and other dipteran larvae, known more generally as maggots, are used as fishing bait and as food for carnivorous animals. They are also used in medicine in debridement to clean wounds. For more in-depth information Wikipedia is most useful and has good in-depth information on all related topics.
